Today’s hike was good, not too tough or technical. We didn’t actually go too far from our last campsite, it just takes a while to get from Point A to Point B. The campsite we’re at now is very large. It’s the last one before the summit, so there are many other groups here. Our great porters scoped out a nice isolated area for us, somewhat away from the maddening crowd. We are near the edge of cliffs, though, and have to be pretty careful while moving about. The Mawenzi Peak is to one side of us, and the great Kibo Peak is to the other side, waiting for us to tackle it. We are in the valley, or sunken crater, between the two peaks. The fog is rolling through constantly, with short moments of sun peaking through. It’s chillier here, with the constant breeze. I wonder how cold it will be tonight for the summit. It’s hard to believe it’s already summit night. It’s make it or break it time!
On a side note, it’s funny to think that we have no idea what is going on off of this mountain. No news, no happenings in the world. We are above the clouds, protected from the ways of the rest of the world. Something major could be going on...we won’t know until we get down the mountain. It’s quite nice not having to think or worry about other things.
Back to the summit...yikes! We have to do it! One foot in front of the other and don’t stop until the top. I don’t know if there’ll be tears, but I'm ready for whatever it takes to get to the top!
